A friend of mine was diagnosed with a serious illness recently. It was a blow to all of us, but interestingly, his biggest concern was about his business.
He runs a small business, and although he’s pretty solid financially, his business and income are likely to really take a dive while he undergoes treatment.
It got me thinking about how lucky we are as professional bloggers. I could actually blog and Tweet and do pretty much everything I do online from a hospital bed if I had to. And even if things were so bad that I couldn’t do that for a couple of months, it would have a very small effect on my income, which is largely residual and just happens automatically.
And of course, looking to the future, even in serious old age I’ll still be able to blog if I choose to – with a blog and readership established over many years, it wouldn’t take a lot of work to keep things ticking over. Or I could sell what should be an extremely valuable asset by then.
It’s interesting that to many people creating a writing business online probably seems a precarious and risky choice. But actually, I can’t think of many more safe or secure ways of earning a living, can you?
