I was fed up today when I had a whole load of spam comments from a company in the financial services sector. I decided to email the CEO:
Dear Mr xxxxx
Please would you stop whoever is spam commenting on my websites.
If it’s you or one of your employees you should be aware that these SEO techniques can have a negative effect on your standing with search engines like Google. Every blog commenting system these days reports this kind of spam. You are very likely to end up losing your search ranking, and the irritation you are causing people like me will probably have a negative impact on your brand.
If you are paying a company to do this for you, then fire them right away. They are doing you a disservice and ripping you off. They aren’t even making an effort to try to make it look as though they’re really commenting on the blogs, they are simply cutting and pasting in a long diatribe about your company, using your company name several times over as a keyword, and providing no less than four links to your website in the text.
One option is to employ an ethical SEO company to do your work for you, but here’s another idea:
Find a new and struggling blogger who works in a sector related to your business. Pay her a monthly retainer, and get her to interact on forums and relevant blogs, to become a part of their online communities. Feed her information about your business and your sector so that she can offer genuine help and advice to people who might actually be interested in what you do.
And no, this isn’t a sales pitch – none of my blogs are in your business area, I have no interest in your products and I can’t help you with search engine optimization.
Yours Sincerely,
Mike CJ
