Disqus Comments - Double your blog comments?

I switched my blog commenting system from the standard Drupal comments package to the Disqus system a month ago. I switched because I like the way Disqus comments work and I love that the service is free. I had a feeling that the number of comments per post had risen as a result, but I checked the figures today and was astonished to find they had more than doubled!

I’ve written 18 posts since that date, so I added all the comments up on those 18, then did the same for the 18 posts immediately prior to the switch. Here are the numbers:

  Total Comments Average per post
Pre Disqus 85 4.72
Post Disqus 172 85

As you can see, more than double!

I can think of a few reasons, but I’d like you to help me out please. Let me know in comments why you think the Disqus system may have doubled my blog comments.
