Eight Ways to get Blog Traffic from Twitter

1/ Tweet your posts!

Yes it’s perfectly acceptable to tweet your own posts, as long as you let people know they’re yours, and as long as you add some value between doing so. If tweeting your own posts is all you do, then people won’t click the links and you’ll probably lose followers as well. The more engaging, interesting and worth following you are, the more people will click your links and even retweet your posts for you.

2/ Retweet other people’s stuff

When you do this, you’re greatly increasing the chance of people doing the same for you. But again, use moderation – you don’t want to blindly retweet everything you see, as people will just ignore you. You can really add value as well, with a quick comment: “RT @johndoe new post “Selling adverts on your blog” <I love number 3 – and I keep getting it wrong!>”

3/ Have an interesting profile and use a personal photo as your avatar

When people see your Tweets in the stream, all they see is your avatar and your name. That’s the chance you have to get them to click and find out more about you. If they do that, have something interesting for them to read about you. If you do that, they’re much more likely to click your link, and if they do, you’ve just got more traffic!

4/ Use a Twitter landing page

Instead of taking them to your home page, create a Twitter landing page. You can then tailor information about you to the fact that the people reading it are Twitter users, and you can use links wisely to send them where you want them to go in your site, which means more page views.

5/ Use Twitter search to follow relevant people to your niche

Set up some searches around your niche’s keywords – this will let you see when people are using those keywords. Simply follow anyone who uses them. You don’t have to be pushy and contact them, they’ll see you are a new follower, and they’ll probably check your profile. If your profile is relevant, they probably visit your site.

6/ Be helpful

Look out for questions on Twitter (hint: you can even set up a search for any tweets with a question mark!) and help if you can. Again, when you do this, people will check you and your site out.

7/ Create a “Micro Tribe”

Get together with a small group of people you know and like on Twitter and agree to promote each other’s work. Nothing shady, they should always read the posts and only promote them if they think they’re worth it, but if you can get 4 or 5 other people in your tribe, you can suddenly access thousands more users.

8/ Get noticed by a Twitter superstar

This is a hard one, and if you try too hard, you’ll probably fail, but if you can attract a tweet about your work from @mashable, @problogger or @chrisbrogan for example, then you’ll enjoy a huge amount of traffic – it happened to me and you can read about it in my post When Mashable Tweets…..
