I’m the last person who wants to tell you how to Tweet, but I would like to share my experience of multiple accounts on Twitter with you, to help you make up your own mind about whether or not it’s the way for you to go.
When I originally joined Twitter, I was running three blogs, in three totally unconnected niches – this one, a scuba diving blog and a travel blog about the island I live on. I decided that it made perfect sense to have three Twitter accounts. Each account would have it’s own followers, specific to the subject. So I set the accounts up and off I went. But after a month or so, I began to hit problems like:

Crossover
It’s amazing how many internet marketers are also divers, for example, and I felt a fraud talking to the same people as two different characters.
Who am I?
I’d get confused as to which account I was working with at any given time, which lead to a strange feeling of schizophrenia!
Parts of me Missing!
Because I wanted to keep information relevant to each account, huge parts of “me” were missing from my other accounts.
Favoritism
Inevitably I developed a favorite account – in my case the Mike CJ account. The result was that had lots of followers, lots of Tweets and had developed a decent reputation, where the others hadn’t.
Losing great help and advice
You don’t have to be a follower or fan of the island I live on to glance at the blog and offer great advice about how to move that blog forward. But as I was restricting the “marketing” of that blog via Twitter to people I knew were interested anyway, that wasn’t happening.
It didn’t take me long to realize that I had made a tactical mistake, and I decided to amalgamate all three accounts into my Mike CJ account. After all, I am Mike CJ, I am a scuba diver and I do live on and promote the island of Lanzarote. The benefits for me have been huge. I can Tweet to my hearts content about my whole life, and everything that interests me, I get great help and advice from other people, and as long as I feel I’m adding value to people who follow me, I can promote all three sites from the comfort of my single Twitter account!

Multiple twitter accounts
Hi Mike,
I understand what you are saying, however, I follow a few people who are not just scuba divers and use twitter to message all kinds of double speak that goes way over my head and I find infuriating as they seem to flood the site with these messages which I end up ignoring and then wishing I had not followed these people in the first place!
Very true
I'm in the same boat as you - I have several areas in which I blog but everything just now seems to end up at @barbaraling . Just because we might be marketers in one thing doesn't mean we can't be masters in others.
Excellent advice
Mike, this clear and concise advice is right on the mark. You just saved your many readers a lot of grief! It seems intuitive to have separate accounts for distinct purposes and ventures, but now that you've identified these gaps and hiccups, I'm completely with you. Many thanks.

Twitter Accounts
Hey Mike, you make a very good point about people missing out on certain aspects. I think running multiple accounts must be really difficult. I recently had to set one up, but I feel the same way, I am tweeting stuff that I would also like my CMoz to say. It's an odd dilemma. Still not sure how to resolve it.
Thanks for the comments!
Thanks for the feedback all. @simon it's a good point, although I would say that it's up to the Tweeter to find their own balance. The answer (if you're going to have one account to serve multiple purposes) is to mix up your tweets - just like you would your conversation in real life. When I'm out for a drink I don't talk exclusively about one subject, and I guess the same applies on Twitter.
Mike
Thanks!
Thanks for this post. I just followed you on Twitter with ID clickktdotcom. Hope I will be get for tips on Twitter!
Multiple accounts
I can see where you are coming from Mike. I recently created multiple Twitter accounts because I too have multiple blogs with diverse interests. However, from a marketing stand point (driving traffic, improving click-through and sales) I want my followers to have targetted information. When I blogged about my work with the Thesis theme and tweeted it on my ordinary Twitter account, I got less then 13/70 of my followers clicking the link. It was posted on my typography blog (http://typegeek.blogspot.com) and when I tweeted to my new Twitter account, 5/5 followers followed the link.. because it was targetted content.
I do run into the problem of keeping everything straight (my problem) but I know my readers will only get info they are interested instead of all the crap that many others Tweeters put out (their benefit).
My tweets are usually about making money online, blogging, wellness, or typography.
Hi Rick. Thanks for popping
Hi Rick. Thanks for popping in to comment. I do think for some people multiple accounts will work. I'll be interested in hearing how it goes as your numbers grow. In the meantime, I'm off to have a look at your site.
Cheers
Mike
I run three blogs myself,
I run three blogs myself, but I never thought about having more than one account on Twitter. What I did instead was add a program that posts any new articles I write directly to Twitter, and somehow they all know they're from me, and life works out just fine.
By the way, this is the first personal blog I've been to using Drupal; wild! Looks like one of those group blog services I used to participate with; it's kind of freaking me out. lol
Welcome Mitch! re Drupal - I
Welcome Mitch! re Drupal - I still can't decide if it was a perverse decision to go Drupal, and one I will regret, or if it was an inspired one which will help me stand out from the crowd. Time will tell, although I am enjoying the ability to really customize the platform.
