Saturday Discussion - Is the blog format dead?

I've recently read a couple of interesting posts on David Risley's and Jordan Cooper's sites, which are talking about dramatically changing the way their blogs look and work. Start by checking those posts out:

Thinking outside the blog

You're not only as good as your last post

Now that you're back, let me share some thoughts I've been having recently along similar lines. I actually "turned dates off" on my posts some time ago - I'm not sure anyone noticed!

But I have also been thinking for some time that when people burst into the "Home" page of the blog, they are effectively arriving at "today" which isn't obviously or immediately relevant to them. I don't see it as a huge problem - less than 20% of visitors arrive at my home page, most come into a post via search. But where I've guest posted, or someone has found a link via a profile, they are arriving at whatever I happen to have posted on the day. The problem is, if they've come to me thinking they can get help with blogging, and they find a road test of a Lexus GS450h, they might just bounce back out.

The solution I was working towards was creating a whole series of dedicated landing pages. So if you click through from my Linkedin profile, you get a "Welcome from Linkedin page" which is pretty business like. If you click through from a guest post I've written on a motoring site, you'll get a page that talks cars and links to all my motoring posts. You get the picture.

But now I'm not sure if my strategy is the right one.

Should we think about changing the whole structure of our blogs?

Should the home page be a single squeeze page?

Does the dedicated landing page idea have merit?

Let's have your thoughts below.
