As our real estate business grew larger, I became more and more remote from the people we were doing business with. It was a natural consequence of moving into a more strategic role, and it's mirrored in almost every organisation - the more "senior" you become, the further removed you are from your clients.
And the tragedy is that the people who reach the top are inevitably the strongest, most professional advocates for the brand. I ended up a distinctly average Managing Director, whilst the business had effectively lost it's very best salesperson - me.
But Twitter has turned that on it's head for senior managers wise enough to be using it. Suddenly, contact with potential and existing clients is once again feasible for them, using the micro blogging medium.

For the first time in history, you and I can talk easily and informally to the top people in industry - we can get the news and the story straight from the horse's mouth.
And for businesses, they can tap into the kudos, the authority, the knowledge and the experience of their very best people, and use them as advocates for their brands.
It's all good.
Which senior managers are you talking to on Twitter?
