We need to consider the levels of engagement of our readers to answer the question.
Occasional Readers
These are people who stop by from time to time – when they think to do so, or if they see a Tweet about our blogs. They aren’t really engaged and they certainly aren’t part of our community.
RSS Readers
There is a level of engagement here – they have had to consciously decide to subscribe to our blogs, and they have had to physically press a button to do so!
Email Subscribers
These people have let us into their inboxes – this is the highest level of engagement we can achieve as bloggers. Not only have these readers gone through an opt in process, but they have let us use one of their most precious online assets – their email account. They are engaged readers and they are our real community.
If you ever plan to monetize your blog, and especially if you want to sell your own products, it’s the last group you should be targeting. Email subscribers will convert to customers much, much more easily than blog readers or even RSS readers. So whilst we need to continue to

Hi Mike,
Thank you for this practical post. I haven't had a sign up area on my blog so far, but after reading your post I think it may be time for me to add one.
I notice many bloggers such as yourself have a free give away for people who sign up. Should I be looking at something like this, and if so, what should I give them? I'm still a newbie in the blogosphere.
Cheers.

Thanks for the post
I like the idea; it's the concept of a funnel right? Get a lot of people to stop by just to look, but then make it worthwhile for them to commit a little more.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I think Feedburner is great, but not yet ready to spend the money. On the other hand, how will I monetize if I don't have reliable RSS? There are probably many options that I'm missing, right?
Good enough reason for me to tune in tomorrow :-)

Hi Guys
Thanks for the comments. Beth - Feedburner is free, so go ahead and get it! Gordie - you're right, I do offer an incentive to people who sign up with the site, and I'll be explaining all about that in a post later today.
